The Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, has appointed Members of Parliament to four mediation committees to resolve legislative deadlocks on key Bills between the National Assembly and the Senate.

The Senate Standing Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations has resolved to summon county governors to address a mounting governance crisis threatening the operations of municipal boards across the 47 devolved units. 

This decision follows a damning testimony from Kisumu County municipal board chairpersons, who alerted the Senate to a total breakdown in the working relationship between their boards and the County Executive. 

The Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi has called for stronger collaboration between the Executive and Parliament to enhance efficiency in legislative business and improve service delivery to Kenyans.

In a message delivered by the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Parliamentary Affairs, CPA Aurelia Rono during the Senate Liaison Committee Retreat in Mombasa County, PCS Mudavadi emphasised the need to deepen institutional coordination, noting that the forum was critical in strengthening governance systems.

The Clerk of the Senate and Secretary to the Parliamentary Service Commission, Mr Jeremiah Nyegenye has reaffirmed the Parliamentary Officers’ commitment to supporting Senators in effectively discharging their constitutional mandate, pledging continued technical and administrative assistance to strengthen the work of committees.

Speaking at the opening of the Senate Liaison Committee Working Retreat in Mombasa, Mr Nyegenye said the forum was crucial for reviewing the performance of committees during the Fourth Session and for charting the way forward.

The Senate has reaffirmed its position that Governors will be required to appear before its Committees to respond to audit queries raised by the Office of the Auditor General.

The Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare on Tuesday held a high-level engagement with the Portfolio Committee on Social Development of the Limpopo Legislature, South Africa, during a benchmarking visit focused on tackling gender-based violence (GBV), femicide and strengthening social protection systems.

The visiting delegation led by Hon. Simon Mathe, who stated that the team was in Kenya to learn from the country’s policy approaches, institutional frameworks and practical interventions aimed at addressing GBV and related crimes.
